YouTube’s first transmedia sitcom goes above and beyond

NewTeeVee - 1 hour 23 min ago

With YouTube just about to celebrate its 7th anniversary (quick, everyone send socks to San Bruno!), it makes sense to look at one of the more ambitious series to come out of its recent Made For Web initiative: The Fine Brothers’ MyMusic, a sitcom surrounded by a feast of auxiliary content.

The Fine Brothers have a long-established reputation for trying new things with web content, from experimenting with interactive YouTube games to creating a whole fake social network to support a series about social media profiles. And this year, they’re using YouTube’s money to create not just a show, but a fully immersive social media experience — as well as not one but three show-within-a-shows.

The premise of MyMusic is relatively simple: The primary series, an Office-esque sitcom, charts the wacky antics of a transmedia production company focused on music, shot in semi-regular blocks.

On top of that, though, there are three side series being produced every week: The Mosh, an interactive Q&A series, music news show MyMusic News, and a live variety show featuring comedians and musicians (past guests include The Jezebels and Rhett and Link).

Each show is hosted by at least one of the show’s characters, who also have vibrant social media profiles across a minimum of three social networks — each. Between Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and Twitter, that’s a total of 25 profiles, each being updated multiple times daily. According to co-creator Benny Fine via IM, there are over 40,000 people following the characters and the company on services outside of YouTube.

Making it happen, said co-creator Benny Fine via IM, are 11 full-time staffers “wearing many hats,” including two full-time writers whose duties include the social media element.

“To do this ambitious project with three weekly shows you need manpower, and it’s still not enough,” Fine added. To accomodate the demanding production schedule, the Brothers have had to scale back on their other series, including Kids React and Spoilers.

The cast includes a mix of TV-born and web-born talent, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer villain Adam Busch and My Damn Channel It Girl Grace Helbig. “We really wanted a mix of more traditional TV actors to mix in with YouTube talent, continually wanting to show talent is talent no matter where it originates,” Fine said.

Along the theme of mixing TV and web styles: The comedy component of MyMusic is released as short-form episodes every Sunday. But then, once every seven weeks, the preceding episodes will be cut together as a TV sitcom-length catch-up episode — certain scenes will even be reshot to make sure that the catch-up episode works as a seamless experience.

Thus, by the end of MyMusic‘s 49-week first season, the team will have created a six-episode season of a TV series, “written in a way to have the content fully work as a web series or a sitcom,” Fine said. “We’re the only one in [the Made For Web] initiative, to our knowledge, making a full-on sitcom.”

Since the show’s launch a month ago, the MyMusic channel has racked up over 2.2 million views across all its various series. Is that enough to be considered a success? The Fine Brothers are torn. According to Rafi Fine, “Views are one thing, but who’s to say what number makes advertisers come on board, make YouTube happy and make a sustainable business to keep the show going?”

But for Benny, “Having 100,000 views an episode or more, all year long, for a scripted show online is not something that’s really been done. And being able to see the tens of thousands that are so engaged with this world — that’s success to me as an artist.”

Sound Designer Needed for 15 min Short (Upper West Side)

Craig's List - NYC - Sat, 2012-05-19 14:15
I am looking for a sound designer to create and mix sound for a short film. It is a 15 minute live-action/animation hybrid. All sound for this film will be created by you--nothing recorded on set will make it into the final cut.

I am looking for someone who can bring their own ideas to the table as well as work towards another person's vision.

Examples of your previous work is required. Online reel is the best way to get your work to us.

The film follows a composer who has exiled himself to a tiny desert island (think 12 feet wide, lone palm tree, cartoonish) in the middle of the ocean to write his masterpiece. While there, a seagull (animated in the classic hand-drawn style) is hellbent on hampering his progress. The film contains no dialogue, though there are a few grunts and screams from the main character, and some squawking from the seagull.

YOU - Dedicated, Committed, Trustworthy, Creative and ready to work with us on this asap. I need someone who is going to really be an asset to the project and be reliable. And I need someone with ideas and creativity, as well as the talent to back it up. In short, you must rise to the challenge.
I would prefer someone who is super talented with some experience but mostly just getting started in the business, looking for a great project to add to their resume. A good attitude is essential, and a sense of humor always goes a long way. That being said, anyone is welcome to apply.

YOUR WORK - Examples of your previous work is absolutely required - online video is the best way to get your work to us, though you can also send audio files.

Pay: $500, somewhat negotiable. I don't have a huge budget for this project, it is a passion project for everyone involved. We all (writer/director/actor/animators/composer/PAs) work full time jobs and do this in our spare time. We're committed to this because we believe in the strength of the film. We've been working on this for over a year, and are nearing the end. We've grown over the course of making it. We want you to as well.

Please expect a few days before a reply!

Best,
Alec

Director/coProducer/shooter (2 cam)+soundguy for CoupleHelp dayShoot (NYC, NJ, manhattan)

Craig's List - NYC - Sat, 2012-05-19 12:39

Director/coProducer/shooter (2 camera)+ sound for Couple-Help
[Note: do not reply to this with a 3 line note and some urls. Follow the TO APPLY lnstructions at the end.]

Thumbnail:
Our new startup, Couple -- Wise (all one word).com (in beta) , needs a director- shooter/ plus soundman partner, ideally able to provide a 2 camera setup, with a co-producer option, for an interactive training video to help couples learn the basic skills of deep empathic listening and conflict resolution; approximately 30-40min, with average edit being 1-2min long.

THE OPPORTUNITIES:
1) Subsequent work (first right of refusal basis--FRR) would include: shooting for a webinar series, a sex technique video training tool, one or two short 1-2 min tutorial videos to help users navigate our web app, You-Tube viral marketing videos, more advanced listening/conflict resolution videos, enough, in other words, to merit a cofounder title and be invited to join our founding team.
2) To make a big difference helping couples make committed relationships succeed?

3) To have training video resume piece (that would be impressive to HR divisions of large companies)
4) To produce subsequent training videos in sex technique, conflict resolution, as well as clever and often funny couple dynamics-related YouTube marketing videos that ideally could go viral to help get the word out about Couple - Wise

WHO WE ARE
Our mission is to be the first truly robust--highly interactive, engaging, individualizable, hopefully viral, web app to enable virtually all couples (gay and straight), especially the 80MM or so unhappy and semi happy US/Canada/ and western Europe couples who cannot afford or won't trust a therapist) to have stronger happier relationships (for as little a $9/mo). But besides these couples, we're also for couples wanting to make good relationships great ones.

SPECS and DUTIES for First job:
1) Approx. 6hr day shoot with two couples (hopefully actors, one in 30s and other in mid 40s to early 50s), minimum 2 mikes plus boom and/or shotgun
2) Shooting date: probably May 19or 20, 10-2pm
3) Ideally this is a two camera shoot, to be able to save lots of time with retakes, and also due to the fact it will all be improve; so difficult to do proper retakes other than reaction shots
4) The Scenes will almost all be of the trainer teaching one or two couples the art of conflict resolution, first one one one, then having the couple on their own put into practice with an argument of their choice, what they learned with further coaching from the trainer. There will also at the start be hopefully at least 2 different couples each roleplay brief 1-2min arguments about money, communication, childrearing, etc to exemplify the nonproductive ways most couples fight
5) For editing (not required): Approximately 20hrs of editing (assuming minimum of 5 edits per hour), not counting logging time
6) The final video will probably be no longer than 30-40 mins.
Segments will probably be no shorter than 30-60sec and some as long as 90-120sec (so probably no more than 30 or so edits plus a fair amount of supers and titles. Our own programmers will take care of the programming needs to enable interactivity
7) Time permitting: to also do a short tutorial for the "entry way" into Couple - Wise which is a process called ClarifyYourNeeds): This is 2nd priority to getting the Listening video done, and optional (only if the shoot raps soon enough)
8) Location: Unless you can find free or nominal place in NYC: House in Princeton (we'll give you a gas and toll allowance), plus lunch or dinner depending on whether morning or afternoon shoot
9) You will need to have your own equipment and the quality should simply look good enough on a 15in screen

REQUIREMENTS:
â?¨1) PASSION for the art and science of couple relationships , and using the Internet to help save (if savable), nourish, and enrich marriages/committed relationships, pioneering the future of the Internet;
2) Proof you are a good director and have the Ability to direct using fairly detailed shooting script, which requires actors to improvise around specific situations.
3) Besides good shooting ability you have a really reliable good sound person.

DESIRED but not required

â?¢ strong desire to get into a potential big game-changing startup even if not yet sufficiently funded
â?¢ ability to find us a location in NYC (just need a pleasant looking middle class living room, easy on the eyes, nothing fancy, distracting), in case we cannot find one ourselves
â?¢ You have a good editor you are used to work with who is willing to work within our budget, also passionate about the mission/topic
â?¢ Passionate about or desire to become familiar with NonViolent Communications (NVC )--the book, or what you can learn via the net (NYCNVC.org for NYC chapter)
â?¢ Willingness to help us line up two other actors (can be amateur) early to late 30s.

COMPENSATION:

FIRST PAYMENT: (For Director/shooter and the sound person (half day) including equipment:
$375-500 (depending on how many bad sound segments, if you end helping us find actors, if you find free or minimal cost NYC location; since currently only have location in Princeton, home of the trainer). We know this is half what you deserve. So read re 2nd installment.
+$50 (gas and tolls) will be provided if you're in NYC and the location is in Princeton (where the two lead actors live.)
EDItiNG: $350-500 (depending on how fast delivered, initiative to add extra value we have not thought ourselves ).

2ND INSTALLMENT: the contract would commit to paying you another $1000 upon first round funding (hoped for by July), or from 20% of gross revenues from subscription sales of the site, whichever is first. For editing: Also another $1000.

Our books are open to reasonable inspection and the CEO/cofounder of Couple - Wise can provide many references. Funding, however, is never possible to guarantee. But founder has already been seedfunded, and had impressive track record with prior projects (mostly PBS aired documentaries).

FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL: Plus you would be given first right of refusal for producing future videos at a competitive rate. (See list above of future video needs). Three more video shoots at close to or more than twice the above rate depending on our level of funding.

DOUBT RE OUR FUTURE FUNDING?:
We have already been seed funded at a famous incubator (which already puts us in top 2-3% of startups in terms of possible success. If you need more assurance re our Startup's chances of financially succeeding, getting next round of funding soon,, and your therefore getting the additional sums we are promising, JUST ask. This week alone we won acceptance in two highly competitive startup festivals,
One national: CommonPitchmke.com, and the other to be announced Monday (may 21), in Montreal, the latter having $50,000 reward.

TO APPLY: email us at above address.
BUT PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS carefully:

A) In the SUB box, please put Director/Shooter /[CL/NYC jobs] and [SAMPLE attached], so we know you read the instructions.
â?¨

3) any experience/knowledge with any model of confict resolution
4) Your time availability, since we hope to shoot and edit this ASAP
5) If you can easily find a living room (large enough to comfortably hold a host/training couple who are instructing a second couple) and a male and female actor looking early to late 30s;
